The Cross and the Character of God (Matthew 27:27-44)

Summary

Just a few hours before Jesus was crucified, one of his disciples asked Him to show them the Father (John 14:8). Jesus answered by saying, “If you’ve seen me, you’ve seen the Father.” His point was that Jesus and the Father are one, and so to see God the Son is to see God the Father. We usually think of this principle in terms of how Jesus lived. But in Matthew 27:27-44, we see that it also includes how Jesus died. When Jesus willingly went to the cross, He wasn’t only offering Himself as the atoning sacrifice for our sins. He was also putting the character of God on display for all the world to see. In this sermon, we focus on three aspects of God’s character that Jesus revealed to us on the Cross.
