According to a Bible commentator named Kent Hughes, the social reformer Upton Sinclair was once asked to speak to a group of Protestant ministers. In the course of his speech, Sinclair read a paraphrase of James 5:1-6. However, he told the ministers that the words came from a well-known anarchist named Emma Goldman. Failing to recognize the source, the ministers became enraged at this fiery denunciation of wealth and demanded that Goldman be deported from the country. Indeed, these are discomfiting words to read, and especially so for financially comfortable Americans. In this sermon, we examine three dangers that wealth poses to our souls and talk about how to make sure we do not fall prey to them ourselves.

Text = James 5:1-6
